Madrid’s Ayuntamiento, through its Area of Culture, Tourism and Sport, will acquire three contemporary artworks at the 34th edition of Estampa, scheduled for 24–27 September at IFEMA Madrid, for the collection of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid. The works are by Eugenio Ampudia, Rufo Criado and Philipp Fröhlich, with a total municipal investment of more than €49,000.
The municipality presents the acquisitions as expanding the collection’s representation of different generations, artistic languages and approaches, as well as of Spanish and international artists.
Ampudia’s ‘Remolino’ (2026) is a kinetic sculpture made from bronze branches and leaves that reflects on invisible forces and the relationship between nature, movement and space.
Criado’s ‘Sin título (Granate)’ (1994) is an industrial painting on wood, characterised by a geometric structure and intense colour, and joins a collection strand devoted to developments in Spanish abstraction of recent decades.
Fröhlich’s ‘Fläche und Durchmesser [Superficie y diámetro]’ (2020) is an oil painting made during the first 2020 lockdown, with a lit lightbulb at the centre of a seemingly everyday scene; it explores light, scene construction and the narrative possibilities of contemporary painting.
Madrid’s culture delegate, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, said public collections have a responsibility both to preserve heritage and to look to the future, describing contemporary-art acquisitions as support for artists and galleries and as a way to expand institutional narratives.
