The Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu has opened 'えをみて えをかく 展覧会', a collection-based exhibition that pairs looking with drawing and encourages visitors to try making art in the gallery. Running from 23 July to 8 November 2026, the show is presented in the museum’s Exhibition Room 1a, the museum hall, and the garden in Gifu City.
According to the museum’s exhibition page, the project is designed around a simple but uncommon premise: seeing artworks and then responding to them through drawing, while also encountering the real-life motifs pictured in the works. The museum says the exhibition proposes a new way to enjoy art through an active mix of appreciation and creation, and it is open to children and adults alike.
The exhibition draws on the museum’s holdings and wider collection context. The page highlights Odilon Redon’s lithograph 'To Gustave Flaubert' from 'The Temptation of Saint Anthony', Second Series, IV, and an untitled 2016 work by Katsuhiko Hibino, the museum’s director, as examples of works on view. The museum also notes that visitors can look at works while drawing, or compare images in the gallery with what they find in the museum garden.
The institution’s own description stresses the museum’s Redon collection, which it calls one of the most prominent in the world. In this exhibition, that collection becomes part of a hands-on experience in which visitors can sketch while looking at the art. The museum also points to works by artists such as Renoir, Munch and Picasso as part of the drawing-oriented display, underlining the breadth of the collection used for the show.
'えをみて えをかく 展覧会' also brings in artists influenced by Redon. The museum says the exhibition includes work by manga artist Shigeru Mizuki and pieces by Hibino that were inspired by Redon. The museum further says that a special workshop led by Hibino will be held during the run of the show.
The exhibition is organised by The Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu. Admission is 370 yen for adults and 240 yen for university students, with discounts for groups of 20 or more; high school students and younger are admitted free. The museum lists regular opening hours as 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry to the galleries 30 minutes before closing, and notes that 16 October will have evening opening until 20:00.
