An exhibition at the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Hayama, will present works from September 12 through November 15, 2026. Numerous works recently added to the museum’s collection will be presented publicly for the first time.
The newly presented works include photographs by Thomas Ruff and Hiroshi Sugimoto donated by Michio Nozaki, a bronze by Zbyněk Sekal bequeathed by Samiro Yunoki, and Kazuo Okazaki’s ‘HISASHI.’
The exhibition examines the atmosphere of ‘kage,’ meaning shadow or shade, at moments when things shift, drawing on the ancient terms ‘tasogare’ and ‘kawatare’ for times when the boundary between light and darkness gradually dissolves and forms become unstable. It follows uncertain images and sensations found in 20th-century art through this atmosphere of things in transition.
Works used to articulate the theme include Samiro Yunoki’s fabric collage ‘Night Picture,’ Kazuo Okazaki’s ‘HISASHI,’ which stands in the interval of light, and photographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto and Daido Moriyama in which light and shadow are recorded. The presentation includes works expressing moments when light and darkness, memory, and the relationship between subject and object become ambiguous or clear.
