Hiroshi Sugimoto served as the guest editor of the latest issue of Aperture magazine, titled ‘Stop Time’.
The issue considers the nature of seeing and humanity’s quest for immortality, and includes an interview with Sugimoto as well as articles about his work and ideas.
Conceived by Sugimoto, the issue transforms the magazine into a kind of time machine bringing together artists and writers to contemplate the origins of photography, the mysteries of color, and the miracle of vision.
It includes Sugimoto’s essay ‘Slice of Life’, on photography’s origins and endings.
The issue also features discussions of the camera obscura, Man Ray’s Mathematical Objects, and Newton’s optical experiments.
Enoura Observatory is described as an artist’s refuge for contemplation.
