'Clappers' is on view at Track 16 Gallery’s Downtown Los Angeles location from September 26 through November 21, 2026. The exhibition opens with a reception on September 26 from 6 to 9pm.
The exhibition consists of a new suite of drawings by Kathleen Henderson that uses allegory, satire and narrative to address ecological chaos, the rise of authoritarianism and the fragility of contemporary American life. These three approaches—allegory, satire and narrative—are directed toward intersecting realities identified in the exhibition’s presentation.
Henderson describes the suite as “an ongoing fretful reflection on the rapid escalation of climate change, its effects on the Earth's plant and animal species as well as the increasingly absurd and insane protestations to the contrary by the extreme right and their partners in crime; fascistic tech overlords.”
Henderson was Artist in Residence at the Mahler and LeWitt Studios in Spoleto, Italy, this past winter, and there began thinking about the origins of fascism in Italy and Spain. The residency provided the setting in which she began that consideration of fascism’s origins.
Two works identified in the exhibition materials are Kathleen Henderson’s 'Bloodgood', made in 2025 using oil stick and oil on paper, and 'Medora', made in 2026 using oil stick and oil on paper.
Before devoting herself primarily to drawing, Henderson painted theatrical sets, film productions, architectural facades, circus rings, and elaborate environments that transformed ordinary spaces into convincing fictions. Her earlier work therefore included sets, productions, facades, rings and environments, all described as transforming ordinary spaces into convincing fictions.
