Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, ‘The Jewelry of Dorothea Prühl’ is on view from September 6, 2025, through January 3, 2027. Spanning nearly five decades of Prühl’s work, the presentation features necklaces and brooches that exemplify her approach to contemporary jewelry.
The exhibition comprises necklaces and brooches dating from 1976 to 2025 and resulted from an extraordinary gift from the Rotasa Collection Trust. The MFAH now holds the largest public collection of Prühl’s jewelry in the world.
Internationally recognized for bold, expressive forms crafted in wood and metal, Prühl was born in 1937 and trained in the traditions of the Bauhaus. Each element is painstakingly carved or formed, resulting in compositions that feel both monumental and intimate.
Prühl attended the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany, and returned to lead its jewelry and metalsmithing department for many years. Through her long career as a teacher and mentor, she influenced generations of artists.
