‘Shantell Martin: Past, Present, Future’ opens on Sunday, September 20. The exhibition will be on view from September 20, 2026, through July 23, 2028, in the West Gallery.
The exhibition will invite viewers to contemplate the multifaceted nature of time and their ever-evolving relationship with it. Its stated focus extends from the tangible echoes of the past to the fleeting immediacy of the present and the imagined landscapes of what is to come, addressing both the subjective and objective dimensions of temporality.
For the exhibition, Martin will design an immersive, site-specific installation in the West Gallery of the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts. The installation will feature textiles, murals and an engagement space, as well as a new outdoor sculpture commissioned for the exhibition. Kathleen Ogilvie Greene, chief audience officer at Grounds For Sculpture, is the exhibition’s curator.
Martin’s new sculpture is titled ‘BENN’. Visitors can create their own blind contour drawings to take home or collaborate with other participants to integrate their individual drawings into a large cohesive mural.
Martin was appointed an MBE in 2024 in the King’s New Year Honours list for services to the British arts and to charity.
