The exhibition at K Space Contemporary in Corpus Christi, Texas, presents sculptures made across different periods of Urrutia’s practice, placing earlier and newer works in dialogue with one another.
For more than a decade Urrutia has built narrative imagery guided, in her own description, by female intuition, looking for connections that can loosen habitual ways of thinking and living. The gallery describes her approach as one of fiction and invention: she draws on Western, Eastern and sporting traditions to construct invented narratives that reframe her own way of thinking and living.
Through hybrid forms, material talismans, and carefully staged encounters, Urrutia weaves her perspective into personal object and myth, giving form to what haunts her and releasing it into the world.
Urrutia is an object maker and educator based in Corpus Christi, Texas, and her work borrows parts of the human form to make powerful compositions and installations that showcase her unconventional creative sensibility. She presently leads the Ceramic Program at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi.
