Masako Miki will give a lecture at the SCAD Museum of Art on Wednesday, September 30, at 2 p.m., celebrating her exhibition ‘The Garden of Wandering Spirits.’ The event is free and open to the public.
The lecture will focus on stories that guide Miki’s practice, including her approaches to needle-felting and watercolor. Miki will also discuss her research on Japanese gardens in the United States, which shaped the installation. The artist’s Yōkai shapeshifter characters, rooted in Japanese Shinto animistic traditions, will be among the subjects addressed.
Miki will examine how the ideas in the installation connect material and meaning, history and the present, and contemporary society.
Miki was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1973 and lives and works in Berkeley, California. She holds an MFA from San José State University and a BFA from Notre Dame de Namur University.
Miki has presented recent solo exhibitions at the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University in Houston; Massachusetts College of Art and Design, or MassArt, in Boston; the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco; the de Young Museum in San Francisco; and the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.
