A lecture will take place at the SCAD Museum of Art on Monday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. The lecture accompanies ‘Four, Once More,’ which pays homage to the SCAD Museum of Art’s first Jewel Box installation. The event is free and open to the public.
The program will examine how Antonakos used color, light, form and space to create works that moved beyond the strict formal concerns of Minimalism and highlighted the spiritual potential of his chosen medium.
Price guest-curated Antonakos’s exhibition ‘Darkness and Light’ in SCAD’s Pei Ling Chan Gallery in 2008. Price will speak about his working relationship with Antonakos and the continuing legacy of the artist’s practice.
Antonakos worked with neon from 1960, first in New York and then internationally, lending the medium new perceptual and formal meaning. His use of spare, complete and incomplete geometric neon forms ranged from direct three-dimensional installations to painted canvases, chapels, walls and renowned backlit panels featuring painted or gold surfaces.
Antonakos conceived his work in relation to site, scale, proportion and character, as well as to the space it shared with viewers. He referred to his art as “real things in real spaces.”
