The SCAD Museum of Art’s Walter and Linda Evans Center for African American Studies welcomes designer, aesthete, and Denim Tears founder Tremaine Emory as the museum’s 2026 Jacob and Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Lecturer. The event is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 28, at 5:30 p.m., at the SCAD Museum of Art, 601 Turner Blvd., Savannah, Georgia.
In conversation with artist, DJ, and cultural instigator Ade “Acyde” Odunlami, Emory will discuss the influences behind his retrospective exhibition ‘Denim Tears from the Pool of Black Genius,’ which is on view at the museum. The exhibition explores Emory’s expansive practice and draws on contemporary and historic artists, works from SCAD’s Evans Collection of African American Art, collaborators’ works, and Emory’s designs.
Denim Tears is a self-described “African American sportswear” label that explores the breadth of Black culture throughout the diaspora while confronting the complexities of American history. Emory founded Denim Tears in 2019, with each new collection intended to tell a story revealing another facet of the African Diaspora.
The lecture is free and open to the public and is presented by the SCAD Museum of Art’s Walter and Linda Evans Center for African American Studies, with generous support from the Jacob and Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Foundation.
