SculptureCenter has announced Max Popov as one of the artists selected through its ‘In Practice 2027 Open Call for Artist Proposals’. Popov will create a new installation from obsolete and cast-off materials, exploring remembrance, renewal, and the residues of daily life; it will be on view in September and October 2027.
For ‘In Practice’, the installation will be composed from the remnants of daily life—the material aftermath of objects after their value has been extracted or exhausted—and the impressions they leave behind. Popov reconstitutes obsolete and cast-aside materials in sculptures and installations carrying layered messages of remembrance and the potential for renewal. His work is both elegiac and speculative, revealing how time accumulates as residue and exposing the mutability of progress and permanence.
‘In Practice: Max Popov’ is curated by Christopher Aque, Associate Director of Exhibitions, and Kyle Dancewicz, Deputy Director. The project is made possible by the Elaine Graham Weitzen Commissioning Fund for Emerging Artists, which supports the production of new work by artists selected from SculptureCenter’s annual open call. The landmark endowment was established in 2024 and reflects Elaine Graham Weitzen’s lifelong commitment to emerging artists and her support of new ideas in art.
