SculptureCenter has announced Jessica Wilson as one of the artists selected through its In Practice 2027 Open Call for Artist Proposals. Wilson’s new installation will be on view in November and December 2027.
Wilson will create the installation using salvaged LED taxi tops, animation, sculpture, and mapping software to explore the material and emotional effects of virtual systems. Through animation, sculpture, and installation, her practice explores the somatic and material effects of virtual systems, rendering unseen forces palpable through light, color, and spatial parameters while balancing technical analysis with emotional charge.
For the project, Wilson is using disused LED taxi tops salvaged from New York City cabs and reviving their onboard advertisements as ghostly echoes. New animations will imagine the machines’ inner turmoil as a cartoonish live-feed MRI of processing and transmitting. The work gives components normally used for targeted advertising an imagined inner life, turning them into protagonists of their own dramatic days.
The In Practice program supports the production of new work by artists selected through SculptureCenter’s annual open call. ‘In Practice: Jessica Wilson’ is curated by Jovanna Venegas, Curator, and Christopher Aque, Associate Director of Exhibitions.
