Moniz will present sculpture, installation, video, and text-based works developed through long-term relationships and international projects concerning representation, safety, precarious labor, war, and activism.
The exhibition gives new form to artistic relationships and open-ended international projects made with subjects who cannot, or who choose not to for their own safety, identify themselves because of their positions within conditions of war, precarious labor, and activism.
Moniz’s practice centers on refusing to appear within artistic and political contexts that often desire personal representation, regardless of its costs. The resulting works—in sculpture, installation, video, and text—document a compounding absence of representability within the artist’s broader practice.
In Practice is supported by the Elaine Graham Weitzen Commissioning Fund for Emerging Artists, which supports the production of new work by artists selected from SculptureCenter’s annual open call. ‘In Practice: Ash Moniz’ is curated by SculptureCenter Deputy Director Kyle Dancewicz and Curator Jovanna Venegas.
