SculptureCenter has selected Jianxin Tian through its In Practice 2027 Open Call for Artist Proposals; the artist will present new sculpture combining mythological and bodily motifs with mass-produced metal and industrial materials from January 27 to March 8, 2027.
Tian’s practice often combines mythological or whimsical motifs with elements of industrial design, using hammered reliefs on mass-produced metal objects.
The artist presses and chisels sensual bodily forms onto domestic objects, continuing an interest in drawing out a poetics of kitchenware that formed during the pandemic lockdown.
His practice is grounded in training in Greco-Roman classical and modernist sculpture and engages with the iconography of everyday life.
For In Practice, Tian will expand from household items to parts from large-scale industrial production, creating forms that diverge from the aesthetics of the assembly line.
The In Practice program supports the production of new work by artists selected through SculptureCenter’s annual open call.
‘In Practice: Jianxin Tian’ is curated by Sharon X. Liu, Asymmetry Curatorial Fellow, and Kyle Dancewicz, Deputy Director.
