Annandale Galleries will open ‘Galay Ga Dhuway – Husband & Wife’ in Sydney on 9 September 2026, bringing bark painting, larrakitj and sculpture by three artist couples into a presentation centred on affiliation as well as art. The exhibition runs until 10 October.
Djambawa Marawili AM and Liyawaday Wirrpanda, Garawan Wanambi and Manini Gumana, and Gunybi Ganambarr and Lamangirra Gumana are the six artists named in the exhibition. Rather than treating the pairings as incidental, the announcement makes their relationships its organising concern.
Will Stubbs, coordinator of Buku Larrŋgay Mulka Centre in Yirrkala, describes the exhibition as a celebration of both the artists and their work that asks audiences to consider “the extra dimension of their affiliation.” He adds: “It acknowledges the longevity of their love, collaboration and creativity.”
The works named in the announcement span the exhibition’s three stated forms. ‘Rumbal Collaboration’, attributed to Marawili and Wirrpanda, is made with earth pigments on board. Wanambi’s ‘Marraŋu’ (2025) uses earth pigments on stringybark, while Gumana’s ‘Garrapara’ (2023) is an earth-pigment work on a stringybark larrakitj.
The exhibition also includes Ganambarr’s steel sculpture ‘Milŋurr Ŋamil font’ (2025). Lamangirra Gumana’s ‘Garrapara’ (2026) is made with natural earth pigment and sand on bark.
