Annandale Galleries will present ‘Galay Ga Dhuwey: Husband and Wife’, an exhibition of bark painting, larrakitj and sculpture by six artists working in three paired collaborations. The exhibition will open in Sydney on 9 September 2026 and remain on view through 10 October at the gallery’s premises at 110 Trafalgar Street, Annandale.
The exhibition brings together Djambawa Marawili AM and Liyawaday Wirrpanda; Garawan Wanambi and Manini Gumana; and Gunybi Ganambarr and Lamangirra Gumana. Its focus is not solely on individual artistic practices but also on the relationships between the artists presented as pairs.
Will Stubbs, coordinator of the Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre in Yirrkala, Northern Territory, describes the exhibition as celebrating both the artists and their art while inviting consideration of “the extra dimension of their affiliation”. He adds that the presentation acknowledges “the longevity of their love, collaboration and creativity”.
The works listed for the exhibition include ‘Rumbal Collaboration’ by Djambawa Marawili and Liyawaday Wirrpanda, made with earth pigments on board and measuring 155 by 120 centimetres. Garawan Wanambi is represented by ‘Marraŋu’, a 2025 work using earth pigments on stringybark and measuring 95 by 61 centimetres.
The exhibition also includes ‘Garrapara’, a 2023 larrakitj by Manini Gumana, made with earth pigments on stringybark and measuring 211 by 24 by 24 centimetres. Lamangirra Gumana’s ‘Garrapara’, dated 2026, uses natural earth pigment and sand on bark and measures 155 by 56 centimetres. A preview period for early access is scheduled from 26 August to 5 September. Annandale Galleries will hold the opening night on 9 September from 6:30 to 8pm, the same day the public exhibition begins. ‘Galay Ga Dhuwey: Husband and Wife’ follows Annandale Galleries’ presentation of artists connected with Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka, an art centre based in Yirrkala that is named in the exhibition material in connection with Stubbs and with Ganambarr’s work. The exhibition’s stated scope remains centred on the three artist pairings and their bark paintings, larrakitj and sculpture, with the Sydney presentation running until 10 October 2026.
