The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery will present ‘Moonlit Confessions Across Deep Sea Echoes: Your Ancestors Are Whales, and Earth Remembers Everything’ by Zadie Xa with Benito Mayor Vallejo from 24 October 2026 to 21 March 2027.
The project is the first major solo exhibition in Ontario by Vancouver-born, UK-based artist Xa, developed with her long-term collaborator Mayor Vallejo. Responding to the specific context of The Power Plant, the immersive installation will bring together new and existing works, including Xa’s paintings, murals, sound, and a mobile sculpture of more than 600 brass bells. Suspended from the ceiling in the form of a conch shell, the sculpture is co-created by Xa and Mayor Vallejo.
The exhibition connects Xa’s ongoing exploration of storytelling, Korean mythology, folklore, diasporic identity and marine ecology to the shores of Lake Ontario.
The project is organized and developed with Esker Foundation, Calgary, where it is on view from 23 May to 23 August 2026, and PHI, Montréal, where it will run from 29 April to 12 September 2027.
