Galerie Thomas Schulte will present Kerstin Brätsch’s first solo exhibition with the gallery during Berlin Art Week 2026. Titled ‘Die Sein: Para Psychics Expanded (Excerpt)’, the exhibition will transform the gallery’s Corner Space and adjacent window front at Charlottenstrasse into a site-specific installation running from 11 September to 7 November 2026. An opening is scheduled for Gallery Night on 10 September, from 6 to 10pm.
The presentation extends Brätsch’s ongoing interest in the movement of images and forms between materials, scales and exhibition contexts. According to the gallery, the installation develops from painting into an environment that behaves like a shifting organism or cosmos, creating an encounter that is simultaneously grounded in the body and directed beyond conventional material categories.
A central concern of the exhibition is transformation through repetition, translation and imitation. Brätsch’s installations are frequently adapted or reconfigured for new spaces, while individual motifs are transferred between media. In the Berlin presentation, traces of works associated with stucco marmo and mosaic appear in other forms rather than being shown directly. The gallery describes this process as a movement between painting, stone imitation, stone and two-dimensional image.
The installation’s vinyl floor is based on a pattern originally produced as a stone mosaic. Its enlarged forms derive through several stages from stucco marmo works, which themselves follow the logic of Brätsch’s oil paintings on transparent Mylar. Seen from above, the floor’s fluid shapes can suggest cells, microscopic organisms or unfamiliar creatures. Colored films applied to the tall windows will alter the appearance of sunlight, allowing the floor’s relationship to light to change with the conditions outside and as visitors move between the two window spaces.
Three large cardboard panels will extend or fold into the gallery’s architecture. They reproduce enlarged motifs from Brätsch’s stucco marmo works, a technique involving plaster, pigment and glue that imitates marble and stone through built-up surfaces. Here, the panels function as reconfigurable display structures for other works. Their patterns are compared in the gallery’s exhibition text to agate geodes, with layered color and irregular fault lines that can also evoke faces or otherworldly figures.
A selection of small colored-pencil drawings from the titular ‘Para Psychics’ series will hang against this changing backdrop. The complete series comprises 100 drawings made through processes of layering and erasure. Their asymmetrical, mandala-like structures incorporate color fields, dark contours and intersecting forms that may recall stained glass, mirrored inkblots, vegetation or many-faced entities. The gallery identifies tarot cards and other systems of divination as among the sources informing Brätsch’s approach to the series, while emphasizing that the works remain open to multiple readings.
The exhibition’s parenthetical subtitle, ‘Excerpt’, frames the presentation as a concentrated section of a larger, interconnected practice. Across the installation, recurring motifs and material shifts create what the gallery calls a microcosm: a space in which references return in altered forms, and in which surfaces that appear fixed remain responsive to light, movement and changing spatial relations. The exhibition will be on view at Galerie Thomas Schulte’s Charlottenstrasse location, Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6pm.
