David Zwirner has announced an exhibition of new works by Jem Perucchini at its Tribeca location. The exhibition runs from November 6 through December 19, 2026. It is the artist’s first exhibition in the United States. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, November 6, from 6 to 8 PM.
Perucchini is an Italian, Ethiopian-born painter. His distinctive body of work draws on early Italian Renaissance painting, the patterns of African wax-print textiles, ancient Greek mythology, and frescoes in Ethiopian churches.
His paintings populate seemingly familiar narrative scenes with a singular cast of characters who are often youthful, lithe, and inscrutable in appearance, while engaging with tropes from religious iconography and traditional portraiture. The compositions are frequently dominated by monochromatic jewel-like hues and illuminated by a glowing spherical moon or sun.
Existing outside any familiar historical chronology, Perucchini’s intricately painted and textured scenes evoke timeless tensions and nuances of human experience, including solitude and partnership, the archetype and the individual, and light and darkness. The New York exhibition follows recent solo presentations at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin and Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville.
