'Nate Lowman: Hanging Out' is in its final week at David Zwirner's 519 West 19th Street gallery in New York, where it closes on 24 October 2026. The exhibition introduces a new motif for the New York-based artist: a group of canvases cut in the shape of keys, all made in 2026.

According to the gallery, keys stand for access, security and exclusion, and the paintings, hung as a series, echo the key's own logic of copying and variation. Some reproduce photographs Lowman took himself; others use finishes bought at hardware stores. Sources range from graffiti he found in Greece and Brazil, including inside the Bouboulina Museum on Spetses, to an advertisement, a friend's house key and the memory of a friend who has died. The gallery also places the works in conversation with Frank Stella, Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp. Titles in the show include 'Nobody's Home', 'Howling Again', 'Strawberry Moon', 'Access (Lilac)' and 'It's All Love in the Field of Dread'.

In a conversation with the curator and critic Dan Cameron in the October issue of The Brooklyn Rail, Lowman traces the series to a dress hung with keys on rings that his late friend, the designer and artist Benjamin Cho, showed at a fashion show some twenty years ago. He told Cameron that he worked on the series for nine or ten months, and that several paintings are third attempts at the same shape, earlier versions having been torn apart and restretched.

Born in 1979, Lowman has lived and worked in New York for about three decades and has long used familiar shaped canvases, from hearts and tree-shaped air fresheners to poppies and maps.
