James McNeill Whistler

James McNeill Whistler was an American artist known for his work in oils, watercolor, and printmaking. He was active during the American Gilded Age and primarily based in the United Kingdom. Whistler rejected sentimentality and moral allusion in his art and was a proponent of the "art for art's sake" philosophy.
