Tokyo Photographic Art Museum has announced a spring 2027 exhibition for the photographer Ken Kitano, with the show currently listed under the tentative title 'Ken Kitano (tentative)'. According to the museum’s exhibition page, the presentation will run from 6 March to 6 June 2027 in the museum’s 2F exhibition space in Tokyo.
The museum describes Kitano, born in 1968, as a photographer whose work seeks to express visions beyond human sight on a cosmological scale. It says his practice has focused on questions of the individual and society, as well as the idea of the other, through methods that are specific to photography. The upcoming exhibition will concentrate mainly on the project 'Collecting Light' and on a related series of long-exposure works.
A central feature of the project is its extended method. The museum says cameras are installed at sites around the world, including locations at the equator and within the Arctic Circle, for periods ranging from six months to one year. These setups are used to record the sun’s path between the winter and summer solstices, producing images that register the movement of light over time.
In a post shared by the museum on social media, it said that three cameras are currently installed at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum for a long-exposure shoot running from the 2026 summer solstice to the winter solstice, over roughly 180 days. The finished work from that process is scheduled to be included in the 2027 exhibition.
The museum has also identified one related work in its collection, 'Kagawa Prefecture, Tonosho Town, Shodoshima, Millennium Tree 2017, winter solstice–summer solstice' from the 'Collecting Light' series, dated 2017–2018. That reference points to the longer arc of Kitano’s project and the way the museum is framing the forthcoming exhibition around both new and existing material.
The exhibition page notes that the museum will be closed on Mondays, except when Monday is a national holiday, in which case it will open and close the following weekday instead. Admission is listed as undecided for now. The exhibition is scheduled for 6 March to 6 June 2027 at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum’s 2F exhibition space.
