'Duet' opens September 30, featuring contemporary photography and moving-image works from China and Japan.
The exhibition presents works by six artists: Murakoshi Toshiya, Wang Tuo, Sui Taca, Luo Yang, Jiang Pengyi and fumiko imano.
The exhibition is the second in a series that began with 'I Know Something About Love: Asian Contemporary Photography' (2018), and was conceived in collaboration with Teng Qingyun, executive director of the Three Shadows Xiamen Photography Art Centre.
Their work ranges from landscapes shot as if tracing memories of a place’s past, and moving-image works that retell history, to photographs taken while exploring mountains and rivers with ancient literary texts as a guide, portraits of young people today, experimental images made without a camera, and collages composed of self-portraits.
In its original sense, a duet is music performed by two people, with distinct voices or melodies answering one another to shape a single composition; this structure echoes the dialogue among the artists in the exhibition.
fumiko imano’s 'le fumistol' comprises portraits in which two photographs of herself are joined to create imaginary twin sisters; shown in this exhibition, the work was produced in 2021 while she was quarantined at a five-star Paris hotel during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The exhibition is organized by Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in cooperation with Three Shadows Photography Art Centre and is curated by Ito Takahiro and Teng Qingyun.
