The Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich has been showing “Between & Beyond. Interspaces and Transitions. Art and Space since 1960” since 3 July 2026, and the exhibition runs in halls 21 to 26 until 15 August 2027. It is drawn entirely from the Sammlung Moderne Kunst, the museum’s own modern art collection, and brings together paintings, objects and installation works made from the 1960s to the present.
Its premise is that viewers never experience art detached from space but always within it: space sets position, movement and perception. The museum separates an intermediate space, a between that opens up amid work and viewer, from an imaginary or transcendent beyond that becomes perceptible through light, shadow and movement.
From the 1960s onwards, artists associated with Minimal Art treated the surrounding space as an integral part of the work, and the exhibition room itself became part of the art. Dan Flavin, Fred Sandback and the long-overlooked Mary Miss are presented as pioneers of that shift. In painting, the picture plane came under the same pressure: Lucio Fontana cut into the canvas, while Ida Applebroog assembled compositions from several separate canvases with complementary motifs. Among later artists, Monika Baer interrupts her abstract painting with subtle signs, and both Victor Leguy and Roman Ondak widen pictorial space into a social dimension by sharing authorship with people who are not artists.
The museum names Nevin Aladağ, Carl Andre, Ida Applebroog, Monika Baer, Dirk Bell, Joseph Beuys, Martin Boyce, Alberto Burri, Dan Flavin, Lucio Fontana, Wade Guyton, Klára Hosnedlová, Donald Judd, Imi Knoebel, Victor Leguy, Mary Miss, Roman Ondak, Fred Sandback, Sean Scully, Augustas Serapinas and Richard Serra among the artists on show. One of the works is Dan Flavin’s untitled (to you, Heiner, with admiration and affection), 1973, which the collection acquired in 2016 with funds from the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne.
The exhibition is curated by Verena Hein and Bernhart Schwenk with Eva Schuster, and is funded by PIN. Freunde der Pinakothek der Moderne e.V. A free audio tour in German and English is available through the Pinakothek der Moderne app. The show opened with a public evening on Thursday 2 July 2026, when admission was free, speeches were interpreted into German Sign Language and Raphael Weilguni performed with Lilian Robl.
