The Drang Gallery in Padstow has added a new Charles Hollywood work, ‘Life’s A Beach Then You Die’, to its latest summer exhibition and online arrivals. The acrylic-on-canvas painting, finished with varnish, measures 125 x 80 cm and is presented as one of several recent works the gallery says it has welcomed over the past few weeks.
The gallery’s mailing-list update, titled ‘New Works To Discover This Summer’, frames the work as part of a wider seasonal selection rather than a single-artist presentation. In the same round-up, The Drang Gallery lists paintings and editions by a range of contemporary artists and makers, including Brian Bent, Nelson De La Nuez, Lauren Baker, Ella Zadok, Wolfgang Bloch, Gstee, Lulu Ash, Jin Woo Prensena, Holly Razavi, Dave Buonaguidi, John Van Hamersveld, Max Steven Grossman and Nick Veasey.
Hollywood is described by the gallery as being known for vibrant and humorous paintings, a brief characterization that sits well with the title of the new piece. Alongside Hollywood’s painting, the summer update includes Brian Bent’s ‘Summer Swells’, a 152 x 183 cm acrylic and ink on canvas; Nelson De La Nuez’s ‘High Maintenance’, a unique mixed-media work measuring 103 x 83 cm; Lauren Baker’s ‘Two Suns Commune’, an archival pigment print hand-finished in oil and editioned at 10; and Ella Zadok’s ‘Noon Reflections’, shown as oil and pastel on canvas at 102 x 67 cm each.
The gallery also lists Wolfgang Bloch’s ‘117-07 - edition’, an archival pigment print in an edition of 225; Gstee’s ‘Harbour, St. Ives’, made in acrylic glass in a walnut frame; and other works that reflect the season’s emphasis on coastal imagery, print editions and mixed-media approaches. Within that context, Hollywood’s ‘Life’s A Beach Then You Die’ appears as a compact summer canvas placed among works that range across surfing, harbour scenes, beach culture and graphic-based imagery.
