The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will mark its reopening on Aug. 15 with a free public musical event inside the galleries, following a summer closure for annual maintenance. The museum said it will welcome visitors back that Saturday with performances by Brooklyn-based ensemble Unheard-of in an immersive program titled 'Musical Miniatures: Compositions Inspired by Artworks'.

According to the museum’s summer announcement, the institution is closed from July 18 through Aug. 14 to complete maintenance and prepare for what it described as an upcoming fall exhibition season. The reopening event is scheduled for Aug. 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Museum Lobby, with the performance taking place throughout the galleries. The museum says the event is free and open to the public.

The program will pair live music with artworks on view across the museum. Unheard-of will perform two sets of musical miniatures, with the first set beginning at 3 p.m. and the second at 4:15 p.m. The ensemble will appear with fellows from its Collaborative Composition Initiative, or CCI, a program the museum notes is hosted with Christopher Stark, associate professor of composition in the Department of Music in Arts & Sciences.

The reopening event is framed as a celebration of the museum’s return after the maintenance closure. Rather than a conventional concert setting, the performance is designed to unfold in the galleries, with music responding to the museum’s collection and display spaces. The event listing describes it as an immersive musical experience.

The museum’s summer communication places the reopening alongside other short-term programming and current exhibitions, but the Aug. 15 event is the clearest sign of the institution’s return to regular visitor activity after the closure period. The schedule indicates complimentary weekend parking is available after 5 p.m. in the East End Garage, accessible via Wrighton Way off Forsyth Boulevard.

The museum’s announcement also pointed visitors to several exhibitions nearing their close before the summer shutdown, including 'Looking Back Toward the Future: Contemporary Photography from China', on view through July 20; Emeka Ogboh’s 'The Song of the Germans', on view through July 27; and 'Apparition: 2026 MFA in Visual Art Thesis Exhibition', also on view through July 27. The reopening performance on Aug. 15 is the museum’s next listed event after that closure window.
