MOCA GA Reopens in Atlanta With a Survey of Its Permanent Collection of Georgia Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA) has reopened to the public in Atlanta after several years of fundraising and planning. Its new space, at 1260 Foster Street NW, is intended to serve the museum's mission of collecting, preserving and exhibiting the work of contemporary artists who live and work in Georgia, and of making that work accessible.

The reopening is marked by an inaugural exhibition drawn from the museum's own holdings, Selections from the Permanent Collection 1949–2025. MOCA GA presents it as a celebration of the depth and diversity of the state's contemporary art community.

The collection now numbers more than 1,600 works. It began with 250 pieces by 110 Georgia artists, acquired from the personal collection of David S. Golden and the corporate collection of the Atlanta firm CGR Advisors, and has since grown through donations, gifts, bequests and purchases. Its range extends from large installations by Radcliffe Bailey to small black-and-white photographs by Harry Callahan, and it includes painting, printmaking, sculpture and new media.

More than sixty artists are represented in the current selection. Among them are Benny Andrews, Nellie Mae Rowe, Herbert Lee Creecy Jr., Rocio Rodriguez, Larry Walker and Ruth Laxson, whom the museum credits with helping to shape the history of contemporary art in Georgia, as well as Radcliffe Bailey, Beverly Buchanan, Lamar Dodd, Fahamu Pecou and Masud Olufani. The museum plans to keep a rotating selection from the collection on view alongside temporary exhibitions such as those of its Working Artist Project.

Regular opening hours, from noon to 5 pm, begin on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. On the evening of Friday, 23 October, from 6 to 8 pm, the museum will hold an opening reception for La aleatoriedad de los símbolos/The Randomness of the Symbols, a solo exhibition by Wilay Méndez Páez, its 2025/2026 Working Artist Project fellow.
