A new podcast asks what Hokusai’s art can tell us about Japan in the past and present. Japan experts Gunhild Ravn Borggreen and Mette Holm take works by the iconic Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai as their starting point for putting Japan in the past and present into perspective.
It runs for 32 minutes and was produced by FilmTone and Besyv for Vejle Kunstmuseum in autumn 2026.
Vejle Kunstmuseum has borrowed more than 100 works by Katsushika Hokusai from museums in the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Denmark. The exhibition includes works from Hokusai’s best-known series, ‘36 udsigter til bjerget Fuji,’ including the famous Great Wave, as well as the unique three-volume book work ‘100 udsigter til bjerget Fuji.’
Hokusai’s art is placed in contemporary dialogue with works by the Japanese contemporary artist Tabaimo and the Danish artist Ida Kvetny. The podcast includes selected passages from Tabaimo’s work ‘public conVENience.’
