Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, known for his work as a painter and printmaker. His series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji," which includes "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," is notable. Hokusai played a key role in expanding ukiyo-e from portraiture to include landscapes, plants, and animals. His influence extended to European artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet during the Japonisme movement.
