Dulwich Picture Gallery will hold ‘Curator’s Talk: Hokusai’ on 3 November 2026, from 12.30 to 1.30pm. The event will focus on Hokusai’s celebrated images and the ideas behind them.
The talk is with curator Jane Findlay, who will explore the stories, symbolism and artistic innovations behind some of the most celebrated images ever created. Among the works discussed will be ‘The Great Wave’ and ‘Red Fuji’. The discussion will consider how Hokusai transformed scenes of everyday life into works of extraordinary imagination and enduring global influence.
Findlay will also address the artist’s groundbreaking use of colour, perspective and composition. The programme will examine why the prints continue to captivate audiences nearly two centuries after they were first published. It will also offer insight into the cultural significance of Mount Fuji as a symbol deeply embedded in Japanese history, spirituality and identity.
The series, ‘Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji’, was created between 1830 and 1833 and is presented in its complete form by Katsushika Hokusai.
The exhibition runs from 20 October 2026 to 17 January 2027. It includes an exceptional impression of ‘Under the Wave off Kanagawa’, commonly known as ‘The Great Wave’.
