The Sumida Hokusai Museum will hold ‘Best of the Sumida Hokusai Museum—The Illustrated Scroll of Both Banks of the Sumida River and Masterpieces’ from September 15 to November 23, 2026. The museum will reach its 10th anniversary in November 2026.
Opened in the birthplace of Katsushika Hokusai, the museum has introduced Hokusai and his pupils through exhibitions taking varied approaches since its opening. The exhibition presents the collection through the perspective of a museum specializing in Hokusai, showing the diverse world of Hokusai and his pupils through works gathered from that viewpoint.
The display includes works previously shown by the museum, along with previously unpublished works and newly acquired works. This selection brings together the museum’s collection highlights as chosen by its curators from their individual perspectives.
The curators will accompany the works they have selected as their personal recommendations with short comments. Among the works listed for the first half of the exhibition is Taisai Hokuba’s ‘Evening Shower’ from the Narasaki Muneshige Collection.
The second half includes ‘Sixteen Arhats’ by the second Katsushika Hokusai. Across the exhibition, the works range from those inheriting Hokusai’s artistic style to works in which individual expression stands out, offering varied forms of expression.
