The exhibition marks the first time Buckman’s poem is presented in its entirety.
‘Show Me Your Bruises, Then’ documents three women—Buckman herself, Cush Jumbo, and Sienna Miller—reciting Buckman’s free-flowing poem of the same name.
The video work recounts experiences of sexual assault while examining the socially imposed shame and stigma surrounding survivors. The three-channel installation is accompanied by an antique textile artwork embroidered with an excerpt from the poem.
In retelling these accounts, the work considers how multigenerational experiences of mistreatment or abuse can produce cyclical patterns that frequently go unnoticed or are dismissed.
Zoë Buckman, born in 1985 in London and living in New York, is a British Jewish multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans time-based media, textile embroidery, sculpture, and more. Across these media, her work engages sustained themes of intersectional feminism, mortality, and equality.
