The Petit Palais in Paris is staging the first large-scale retrospective devoted to the painter Eva Gonzalès (1847-1883), on view from 15 September 2026 to 24 January 2027, before the project travels to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in February 2027.
According to the Petit Palais exhibition page, the monographic presentation is unprecedented: Gonzalès has never been the subject of a retrospective on this scale, either in France or internationally, although she is regularly grouped with her contemporaries Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot. She was the only pupil of Édouard Manet, with whom she maintained an exceptional artistic relationship, and she established her own voice in a century that left little room for women artists. Supported by an attentive and cultivated family circle, she built a short career and died prematurely at the age of 36.
The exhibition brings together close to 100 works: paintings, pastels and prints. The Petit Palais states that the show is organised in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and benefits from the exceptional support of the Musée d'Orsay.
General curatorship is by Annick Lemoine, former director of the Petit Palais and president of the public establishment of the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée de l'Orangerie. Scientific curatorship is by Stéphanie Cantarutti, chief heritage curator in charge of modern paintings (1800-1890) at the Petit Palais, and Fleur Roos Rosa de Carvalho, curator of prints and drawings at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
The Amsterdam presentation is announced by the Petit Palais only as a stage in February 2027. The Van Gogh Museum has not yet published an exhibition page or dates for it: its own exhibition listing currently shows only the summer presentation on Vincent van Gogh's route to worldwide fame, running to 6 September 2026.
