The exhibition 'A Matter of Balance' will run from 6 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, presenting the broad range of Hanne Nielsen and Birgit Johnsen’s innovative work with video art and media experimentation over more than 30 years. It is centered on two newly produced video installations, 'Visible/Invisible' and 'A Matter of Balance'.

The artists address themes of power, violence and the role of drone technology in modern warfare. The exhibition also includes older works, including single-monitor pieces that combine humor and everyday actions with a feminist perspective.

One example is 'Afrivning af løg' (1995), in which the two women grate onions as tears roll down their cheeks until they begin to cry outright. The exhibition’s title frames balance as a recurring concern in the duo’s practice, including the relationship between individuality and community and between humor and seriousness.

Nielsen and Johnsen have worked as an artistic duo since 1993 and trained at Det Jyske Kunstakademi, graduating in 1991 and 1990 respectively. They have exhibited at ARoS in Aarhus and Overgaden in Copenhagen, and their work is held by the Statens Museum for Kunst and Bonn’s Art Museum.

The exhibition is supported by the Beckett Foundation.
