Sammlung Goetz will present an exhibition of works by Sterling Ruby at its /Schaufenster space in Munich from 16 July to 24 October 2026. The show brings together works made between 2008 and 2016 and offers a focused look at the Los Angeles-based American artist’s wide-ranging practice, which spans sculpture, ceramics, bronzes, collage, textile works and large spray-painted paintings.
The institution’s announcement positions the exhibition within a broader presentation programme at Sammlung Goetz /Schaufenster, the venue where the collection stages rotating exhibitions from its holdings in central Munich. The exhibition is titled 'Sterling Ruby' and is located at Pacellistraße 5, 80333 Munich. Opening hours listed on the institution’s website are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 to 18:00, Thursday from 14:00 to 20:00, and Saturday from 11:00 to 17:00, with an admission fee of €4, reduced €3.
Ruby is described by the institution as an artist whose work brings together autobiographical, art-historical and sociological sources. The exhibition text says he works through deconstruction and reconstruction toward the idea of a non-hierarchical and boundless universe. The selection shown at Sammlung Goetz /Schaufenster is intended to give insight into that layered practice through a set of works spanning nearly a decade.
The collection’s exhibition page highlights the spray paintings as central to Ruby’s practice and identifies them as among his best-known groups of works. According to the institution, these large-scale paintings combine gestural abstraction, graffiti and atmospheric fields of colour with an industrial aesthetic, while also engaging directly with the history of American postwar painting. The presentation also includes works from other important bodies of work, underlining the range of media Ruby has used across his career.
Among the specifically named works in the exhibition text are 'DESIPRAMINE (THE CARDIAC)' from 2011, a vessel-shaped ceramic from the 'Basin Theology' series; an early bronze sculpture, the monumental 3-metre-high 'RWB DROPS' from 2011; and 'Vampire 81' from 2012, a soft textile sculpture described by the institution as recalling the wide-open but slackened mouth of a vampire. These examples are presented as milestones within Ruby’s oeuvre rather than as a full checklist of the display.
The exhibition is curated by Karsten Löckemann with Anna Reimnitz. Sammlung Goetz has also announced related public programming, including 'Meet the Curator' with Karsten Löckemann on 23 July 2026 and additional after-work guided tours and workshops later in the summer. In the invitation material, the institution notes that Ruby’s work is being shown with works from 2008 to 2016, and that visitors may encounter waiting times at entry to the exhibition space.
