Every month, the same set of cultural questions is put to one artistic, academic or civic collaborator.

He describes a large oak desk that he bought in an antique shop twenty-seven years ago and keeps in his studio, where it is scuffed and splattered with paint and used every day.

He is finally getting round to reading Paul Bowles’s 1949 novel ‘The Sheltering Sky’, which a friend compared with the film ‘Sirāt’ (2025). He says he loved ‘Sirāt’ and is equally captivated by ‘The Sheltering Sky’.

‘Panorama Europa’ is on view until 1 November 2026 and presents work by ten Irish artists, including Ursula Burke, Michael Canning, Sian Costello, Genieve Figgis, Claire Halpin, David Eager Maher, Rachel Fallon, Eleanor McCaughey, Isabel Nolan and Geraldine O’Neill; it is curated by Fiona Kearney and Katie O’Grady.

The exhibition presents the artists’ work through traditions of European painting as they explore contemporary identities and wider societal issues. Its selected paintings, tapestry, sculptures and drawings reference works from the Pre-Renaissance through Impressionism.
