Mona Hatoum’s exhibition is scheduled to run from 3 October 2026 through 31 January 2027 at Kunst Museum Winterthur | Beim Stadthaus. The solo exhibition offers a deeper insight into the impressive and oppressive work of one of the leading contemporary artists. The exhibition is curated by Konrad Bitterli.
The museum has scheduled the opening of ‘Mona Hatoum. Routes of Dissonance’ for Friday, 2 October 2026, at 18:30, with remarks by Winterthur mayor Stefan Fritschi, Galerieverein president Kaspar Geiser and museum director Konrad Bitterli.
Hatoum’s practice uses the body as a projection surface for social and political themes: born in Beirut in 1952 to a Palestinian family, she moved to London in 1975, experienced foreignness herself and translated that experience into disturbing performances in the 1980s.
Since the 1990s, Hatoum has realized sculptures and installations in which the absent body, like the private home, functions as a metaphor for threat and vulnerability. Her work sets strict forms against fragile materials, while objects from everyday life appear to promise comfort but reveal a latent danger. ‘Remains of the Day’ is a work by Mona Hatoum dated 2016–2018.
Hatoum has said, ‘I love using furniture in my work. They deal with daily life. When these objects appear unstable or threatening, they remind us of our own fragility.’
