Hilarius Hofstede’s ‘Courant Van Gogh’ is scheduled for 27 September 2026 through 10 January 2027. The exhibition is described as the main exhibition in Part 2 of the Netherlands Year 2026.
According to the Kunsthalle Darmstadt’s announcement, the exhibition will present the Amsterdam multimedia artist’s work to a larger German audience for the first time. It assembles around 250 paper works from Hofstede’s studio and private collections, supplemented by site-specific spatial installations.
Those installations refer to questions of vulnerability, care and psychological disposition. Hofstede’s intensive engagement with his countryman Vincent van Gogh is central to the exhibition.
A copy of van Gogh’s only print, a portrait of his treating physician Dr Gachet, initiates the exhibition’s dialogue with the painter. The announcement also gives the image of a tapir at a sickbed as an example of the exhibition’s treatment of ‘genius and madness’.
Listed works include ‘SCARRY SCARRY NIGHT’ from 2025 and ‘Van Gogh at the Asylum’ from 2026. Hofstede has presented exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, and the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris.
