Reflex Amsterdam has announced its representation of Enoc Perez, alongside the artist’s first exhibition at the gallery. Titled ‘Drawings & Selected Paintings 2020–2026’, the presentation opens on October 9, 2026, and will be accompanied by the publication of Perez’s forthcoming book, with texts and essays by Richard Prince, David Salle and Jacoba Urist.
The exhibition brings together drawings and selected paintings that address memory, modernism and desire, moving in the unstable territory between abstraction and representation. Perez draws on the visual language of modernism, architecture and popular imagery, treating motifs not simply as descriptions of their subjects but as carriers of personal, collective and imagined memory.
Hotels in Puerto Rico recur in this account of the work. The gallery describes them as spaces suspended between lived experience and projection, associated with childhood, longing and possibility. Bottles, advertisements and other fragments of visual culture also appear as images that can seem remembered as much as observed. A named painting, ‘Glenn O’Brian Jazz CD Collection’ (2020), is an oil-on-canvas work.
Drawing has a particular role in Perez’s practice as a site of discovery, where images can emerge quickly and instinctively. “To figure out what to do next,” Perez says, is what drawing enables. He has also described his aim in explicitly personal terms: “I’m just trying to steal a time that preceded me. A moment when everything was new to me and when possibility was realistic.”
