Reflex Amsterdam has announced that it now represents Uwe Tobias, the artist known in part for his collaborative practice with his brother, Gert Tobias, as the duo Gert & Uwe Tobias. The announcement is accompanied by plans for a solo exhibition of Tobias’s recent work, which the gallery says will receive its worldwide premiere in Amsterdam in late November.
The exhibition is expected to remain on view for three months, continuing through the beginning of March 2027. Reflex has not released exact opening or closing dates. The announcement also does not identify a formal title for the exhibition or specify the Amsterdam venue beyond the city itself.
According to the gallery, Tobias has spent the past seven years developing a deeply personal body of work as a solo artist. The paintings engage with the traditions and ideas of memento mori, vanitas and still life, while also turning toward landscape and imagined terrains. The new work moves between figurative compositions and abstraction.
Reflex describes the paintings as occupying a space between memory and invention. Grotesque figures, ambiguous forms and dreamlike spaces are presented as elements that can evoke both familiarity and mystery. The description places Tobias’s solo practice in relation to established genres while emphasizing a more unstable, invented pictorial world.
The announcement includes several examples of Tobias’s paintings from 2019. These include ‘I wish’, an acrylic on linen measuring 195 by 165 centimetres; ‘Let you go’, also an acrylic on linen of the same dimensions; and ‘ohne titel’, listed with the same medium and measurements. The supplied material does not indicate whether these works will be included in the forthcoming exhibition.
Alongside the exhibition, Reflex is preparing a publication scheduled for simultaneous release with the opening. It will contain a selection of more than 150 paintings. No publisher, editor, essay contributors or further bibliographic details have yet been announced.
Reflex Amsterdam is located at Weteringschans 79 A in Amsterdam. The gallery’s announcement characterizes the forthcoming presentation as Tobias’s first worldwide solo premiere of this new body of work, with further information promised ahead of the opening.
