Portland Art Museum is in the final days of 'David Hockney: Works from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation', a broad survey of the British artist’s work that remains on view through July 26, 2026. The museum describes the exhibition as the largest North American survey of Hockney’s career, bringing together more than 200 works across six decades.
The show runs at the museum’s 1219 SW Park Ave. location in Portland and is organized by Catherine Whitney, Honolulu Museum of Art director of curatorial affairs. According to the museum, the exhibition spans prints, collages, video, and photographic and iPad drawings, tracing the range of Hockney’s practice from early experiments to later digital work.
Hockney is represented through a set of recurring subjects that have become central to his public image: California swimming pools, Yosemite, and British landscapes. The museum also points to intimate portrayals of friends, family, and queer desire as part of the exhibition’s content, framing the presentation as a broad look at both his subject matter and his evolving approach to image-making.
The exhibition text emphasizes Hockney’s long engagement with technology as an artistic tool. It notes that he has explored historical modes of representation including Chinese scrolls, Cubism, and Italian Renaissance perspective, while also drawing on mirrors and the camera obscura. More recently, he has used copy machines, photo editing software, iPhones, and iPads, a development the museum presents as part of his effort to expand his visual vocabulary.
Among the works highlighted on the museum site is a 2014 photographic series described as using 'reversed perspective,' in which the viewer’s attention is drawn tightly to the foreground rather than a distant vanishing point. The museum says that multiple angles and sharply focused viewpoints converge at once, creating an effect that simulates movement through space and time.
Portland Art Museum also places the exhibition within a larger run of related programming. Its calendar lists talks, family activities, screenings, and members’ events connected to the Hockney presentation, including 'David Hockney: An Opening Conversation' on February 15, 2026, 'Evening for Educators: David Hockney' on February 17, and 'Members Night: David Hockney' on July 23. The related film series at PAM CUT @ The Whitsell includes 'A Bigger Splash' on June 14, 2026, and the museum’s exhibitions page lists the show under current exhibitions until July 26, 2026.
