'Donald Moffett: IMPEACH' is on view from June 5, 2026, through April 11, 2027. From Pride to Election Day 2026, the Brooklyn Museum marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with 'Drawing America: US@250'.
'Donald Moffett: IMPEACH' is organized by Kimberli Gant, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.
In 'Donald Moffett: IMPEACH', Moffett transforms Representative John Lewis’s 1998 speech during the Clinton impeachment proceedings into an immersive sound installation. The installation places listeners in the US House of Representatives in December 1998, as the chamber debates whether to impeach President Bill Clinton and Lewis delivers a deeply personal speech about surviving a devastating storm and holding a divided nation together.
Moffett removes Lewis’s speech from its original context, allowing listeners to focus on the details of the congressman’s story, the echoes of applause, and the sound of the gavel as the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee attempts to silence him.
'IMPEACH' is an opportunity to consider its meaning on the United States’ 250th anniversary, a time again marked by both hostility and hope.
