Maurizio Cattelan’s ‘NIGHT’ will run at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin from September 10, 2026, to March 7, 2027. Cattelan was selected by an international jury for the 2026 Preis der Nationalgalerie.
The exhibition is billed as the Italian artist’s first major solo presentation in Germany. It brings together historical works and new commissions in the Neue Nationalgalerie building. Among the works included are ‘Novecento’ (1997), ‘La Rivoluzione Siamo Noi’ (2000), ‘Him’ (2001) and ‘Untitled’ (2003).
At the centre of ‘NIGHT’ is a new site-specific work conceived for the Neue Nationalgalerie. The commission initiates a far-reaching intervention into the museum’s spatial framework. The exhibition reshapes how the building is used and experienced, while familiar modes of display give way to an environment defined by gathering, reflection and attention.
Cattelan was born in Padua in 1960. Since the early 1990s, his work has addressed religion, childhood, authority and generational collective trauma. ‘NIGHT’ marks his return to Berlin, where he co-curated the fourth Berlin Biennale 20 years ago.
The Preis der Nationalgalerie was founded by FREUNDE der Nationalgalerie in 2000. In 2026, the prize moves into the glass hall of the Neue Nationalgalerie and takes a format described as a singular opportunity for an artist to realise a focused and ambitious presentation.
The exhibition is made possible by FREUNDE der Nationalgalerie and supported by BMW. An opening event for Maurizio Cattelan is scheduled at the Neue Nationalgalerie on September 9, 2026, at 9 pm. On September 10, the venue will host a Banana Bread Breakfast Book Signing at 10 am and a poster signing at 4 pm.
From September 10 to 13, during Berlin Art Week, ‘Maurizio Cattelan. NIGHT’ will be open daily from 10 am to 10 pm. Regular opening hours resume on September 14.
