'Sitting on a Fence. Johanna Seidel – Malerei' is being presented in the Projektraum Neue Galerie at the Städtische Galerie Dresden from 11 September 2026 to 10 January 2027.
Seidel’s painting is figurative and fantastical-realistic, sometimes incorporating naive elements; she often builds narrative scenes and staged portraits around young people, especially women.
Her motifs often resemble dream images despite being based on quasi-everyday scenes, and they often quote mythology and art history.
Seidel describes her artistic aim as finding a balance between naive and realistic figuration while maintaining an elemental pleasure in colour and painting materials.
Born in Sebnitz in 1993, Seidel studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 2014 to 2021, continued as a master student with Anne Neukamp until 2024, and lives and works in Dresden.
