Catriona Jeffries Gallery in Vancouver will present Ian Wallace’s ‘Surface / Structure / Street: Works 1986–2014’ from 18 September to 7 November 2026. An opening will take place on Thursday, 17 September, from 6 to 8pm.
The exhibition brings together works that combine verité photography and minimalist painting strategies on stretched canvas surfaces. Its selection includes pictorial instances of bare canvas stretchers, skyscrapers with steel skeletons, multicellular glass grids, architectural sightlines, traffic lines and city skylines, often using montages of images surrounded by blocks of colour on canvas.
Works addressed in the presentation include ‘Clayoquot Protest (August 9, 1993)’ (1993), ‘Mies Pavilion Barcelona II’ (2009), ‘Royal Academy Courtyard’ (2008), ‘Abstract Composition (La Défense, Paris) I–III’ (2011), and ‘In the Studio (With Canvas) I–V’ (2014). Wallace writes: “the wall functions as a screen for a sequence of pictures and thus constructs what is, in effect, a text of images.”
‘The Crowd, Valencia’ (detail), from 1996, is made of photolaminate with acrylic on canvas and measures 72 by 60 inches (183 by 153 cm).
