Mark Wallinger’s exhibition ‘Circling the Square’ opens at Paul Stolper Gallery in London on 17 September 2026 and runs until 24 October. A private view takes place on 16 September, from 6 to 8pm.
The exhibition brings together new ‘Field Paintings’ and Wallinger’s 2026 film ‘The force that through the green fuse drives the flower’, a 21-minute, 34-second endless loop. The film uses a continuous orbital tracking shot filmed through the railings around the garden in Bedford Square, Bloomsbury. In its final projected form, the footage is conjoined with its mirror image.
Wallinger’s ‘Field Painting 8’ (2026) is made from voile on stretcher and measures 90.5 by 90.5 cm. The ‘Field Paintings’ are constructed by stretching layers of finely gridded mesh voile over supports, producing shifting moiré patterns through tensions and misregistrations between the meshes.
‘Circling the Square’ is presented in parallel with Wallinger’s ‘Field’ at Arts Collective in Northampton, where an expanded selection of works is on view from 7 October 2026 to 22 January 2027.
