Justin Caguiat: ‘Change Ringing’ will be presented at Serpentine South from 8 October 2026 to 10 January 2027. Painting, sculpture and sound come together in a site-specific installation described as being in constant flux.
The installation includes mural-size paintings in which figures, abstract forms and colours merge. Bronze bells will ring throughout the gallery, while thermochromic paintings change colour as the temperature changes.
‘Change Ringing’ brings together painting, sculpture, printmaking and sound. The gallery’s walls gather and amplify the bells’ chimes, transforming the space into a listening instrument. Caguiat is best known for large-scale paintings on unstretched canvas or linen, often spread across entire walls.
Caguiat’s work examines the relationship between architecture, spirituality and rituals embedded in everyday urban infrastructure. ‘Change Ringing’ builds on ideas first explored in Caguiat’s project ‘Zodiac Machine’, which was organised across a church, market and surrounding public spaces in Madrid. ‘Zodiac Machine’ drew inspiration from Justo Gallego Martínez’s ‘Catedral de Justo’, a structure the Spanish architect designed and built alone using recycled and found materials.
‘Change Ringing’ considers how buildings accumulate memory, ritual and acts of transformation. The exhibition is curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, and Natalia Grabowska, Curator at Large, Architecture and Site-specific Projects, with Alexa Chow, Assistant Exhibitions Curator.
