Art historian Richard Powell will discuss his book ‘Colorstruck! Painting, Pigment, Affect’ at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture in Charlotte on September 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
Powell, the John Spencer Bassett Distinguished Professor of Art & Art History at Duke University, will use live readings, images and video to explore the cultural and historical contexts of color in Black American art.
Drawing on the twentieth-century term “colorstruck,” which describes prejudice against people with darker skin tones, ‘Colorstruck!’ examines paint and pigment in the work of artists including Jacob Lawrence, Alma Thomas, Sam Gilliam, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Nina Chanel Abney and Henry Taylor.
The event is free and open to all ages. Following the presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to meet Powell and purchase signed copies of the book.
