Alma Woodsey Thomas was an American artist and art teacher based in Washington, D.C. She is recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century and was the first African-American woman to be included in the White House's permanent art collection. Thomas is known for her colorful, abstract paintings created after her retirement from teaching.
